Assess AM Feasibility With Improved Manufacturability Checks

Product Stephan Galozy | November 7, 2024 | 4 min read

Our improved manufacturability checks are making it easier to assess whether a part is feasible for additive manufacturing and with what technologies.

3YOURMIND software is well-known and broadly used to identify candidates for on-demand manufacturing and 3D printing.

Our September release gave interested customers access to our new manufacturability assessment in 3YOURMIND. We can already see how much it helps users find the right production technology for parts, evaluate part prices in metal or plastic, powder bed, filament, or wire, and identify necessary design improvements early on. After implementing customer feedback this month, we're calling it “the new standard.”

Read more to see how it works.

Manufacturability Checks: The New Standard

Our latest version, 24.11, comes with updated manufacturability checks that will soon replace the former technology checks.

The advantages are substantial:

  1. Easy-to-use recommendations for suitable technologies
  2. More checks for 3D models
  3. Better visuals highlighting potential manufacturing risks
  4. Intuitive, at-a-glance  comparison of all technologies

We are proud to see our customers trust the 3YOURMIND algorithms built based on industry know-how, customer feedback, and research. The best thing is that we made it easy to configure on your platform if you want to apply your parameters and thresholds (e.g., for what part sizes you can realize with your equipment).

Laser PBF Pneumatic Brake Panel for Railway Vehicles

Pneumatic brake panels are crucial in trains, subways, and other rail transportation. Complex geometries assembled from multiple parts lead to high costs, lead times, and extra weight.

The part was identified as a high-potential use case for on-demand manufacturing. Evaluating the part with 3YOURMIND software indicates the best possible AM technology for this part, which, due to its original material requirements, geometrical shape, and complexity, is Metal Powder Bed Fusion (DMLS or PBF). The software also indicated potential manufacturing risks, such as the necessary support or the holes, which led to clear instructions for re-design.

WAAM "Stabbing Guide" for Energy Drilling Applications

The TDS-11 Stabbing Guide is a specialized tool used to connect tubular components such as drill pipes, casing, or tubing. Proper alignment and connection of these tubular components are critical for efficient and safe drilling operations. The part is typically cast using metal alloys and then processed using CNC machining.

The 3YOURMIND software analyzed the two 20-inch parts and suggested WAAM as the technology that best meets the baseline criteria. The software’s cost estimates matched official vendor quotes, which saved weeks for the customer in back-and-forth with potential suppliers and gave its management all the necessary information for quick realization at a glance.

The part was assessed, redesigned, and produced with new suppliers in 10 months, saving 14 months of lead time. Not bad for the customer’s first redesigned part!
